High Power Benchrest “Nail Biter” Shooting Rules 



Any Centerfire Rifle – .224 cal up to and including .338 cal. 

If your rifle has a removable muzzle brake, please be courteous and remove it. It may be easier on you but its hell on the competitors on either side of you.

All bolt guns will compete against each other and all gas guns will 

compete against each other.



IBS 100 yd Benchrest GroupTarget and IBS 100 yd Benchrest Score Target

Group target has 1 record bull and 1 sighter bull. 

Score target has 5 record bulls and 1 sighter bull.

Targets may not be modified from original format by competitor


Courses of Fire: 40 record shots + sighters

All shots will be fired at 200 yds. (yes, on the 100 yd target)

Competitor will fire four (4) 5-shot groups and four (4) 5-shot scores 

Group target will be: One (1) 5-shot group per record target

Score target will be: Five (5) record shots per target

Each relay will consist of (1) 5-shot group target and (1) 5-shot score target.

Unlimited sighters allowed on sighter bull


The winner will be determined by place of finish at each discipline.


Time Limit:

Shooters will be allocated 20 minutes for any sighting rounds and the firing of (1) 5-shot group

target and (1) 5 shot score target. This will be done (4) times.



Any rifle, any weight, and any sights with a safe trigger is allowed. No rail guns.

No coaching or spotting by non shooter allowed.


Wind flags can be set before the first relay and not moved after firing begins.


Rifles shall be fired from benches, single load only, on non-conforming pliable sandbags, both front and rear.  Adjustable pedestals with sandbag under the forearm of the rifle are permitted.  Blocks, boxes, or such devices to achieve proper elevation (bipods) are permitted.  

Any machine rests, 1 piece rests or any rest that can return to battery or which retards recoil will not be allowed.



OPEN ACTIONS: All bolts shall be removed from the action until the command “Place Bolts in Rifles” is given.


FIRING: No shots shall be fired until the command “COMMENCE FIRING”  has been given and no shot shall be fired after the command “CEASE FIRING” has begun.

After the “CEASE FIRING” command, all bolts must be removed and chamber flags inserted.
